GITC History

The Korean Society for Rehabilitation of persons with Disabilities (KSRPD) has held IT competitions to assess the informatization education enabling persons with disabilities to develop the ability to leverage ICT and the outcomes of the education, focusing on the importance of the informatization for persons with disabilities for 23 years since 1992.

We held competitions in various forms with diversified topics at Cheollian(천리안) Education Center from 1992 to 2000, colleges nationwide from 2001 to 2005 cooperating with KT and the National Information Society Agency (NIA), and exhibition venues working with SKT from 2006 to 2011, responding to the change in time and needs of persons with disabilities.

We held the first international competition named the APEC IT Camp for Youth with Disabilities in 2002, which was agreed upon during the APEC Leaders' Meeting in 2002. In 2011, it was determined to host the competition in developing countries to solve information disparities, social discrimination, poverty, and human rights issues regarding youth with disabilities in such countries. Accordingly, the Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities was held in Vietnam in 2011, Incheon Songdo in 2012, and Thailand in 2013. We strive to improve IT accessibility for youth with disabilities not only in Korea but also in the international community, especially in developing countries.
